stm_aix("p1i0","p0i0",[0,"AMENDED HARMONISED STANDARDS FOR NEW LIFTS\r\n\r\nAll new lifts installed in the UK must comply with the Lifts Regulations (EC Lifts Directive 95/16/EC).\r\n\r\nInstallers of new lifts are responsible for ensuring their installations are in compliance with the Essential Health and Safety Requirements \r\n(EHSR’s) of the Lifts Directive.\r\n\r\nIn most cases compliance with the EHSR’s of this European Law is achieved by compliance with British Standard BS EN81-1 for electric lifts \r\nand BS EN81-2 for hydraulic lifts.\r\n\r\nBoth EN81-1 and EN81-2 have been recently amended to include changes to machinery guarding as required by the Machinery Directive as \r\nwell as provisions to prevent the unintended downward movement of a lift car while the doors are open during loading operations.\r\n\r\nImplementation of the new Standards starts on 1st January 2012.  This date is that on which the lift is commissioned (put into service, the \r\nTaking Over date) regardless of when it was ordered. \r\nAll new lifts installed by companies that use EN81 to achieve compliance with the EHSR’s of the Lifts Regulations must comply with the new \r\nstandards from 1st January 2012.\r\n\r\nThe EN81 Standards need not apply to modernisation of existing lifts.  British Standards BS 5655-1:1986 together with BS 5655-11:1989 can \r\nbe used for the modernisation of lifts but discerning owners will insist that the EN81 series of Standards are applied where possible.\r\n\r\nThese laws and Standards are interlinked and complicated to interpret without specialist knowledge.
